The other thing that you did not mention from the article about how earnings are calculated is that calculations can take up to 4 weeks to come through. That was a point I found rather interesting from the help article.
I believe Medium should take an approach similar to some other systems. Where they calculate a daily pool from number of active members and simply divide it equally by number of reading minutes.
