These sort of situations can be heartbreaking and very much so highlights every single failing of an over run medical system.
I do believe the real problem comes from a severe lack of ability of the entire medical system. The modern system has managed to figure out and identify how to resolve acute injuries. Broken bones, all types of cuts can be stitched and heal. But when it comes to any sort of chronic condition the vast majority of the time they prescribe a pill because that is the only course of action possible. For all the years of research and money spent, all they can do is hide the symptoms with a pill, and create situations like this where losing access to the pill causes much worse outcomes.
